Texas Hunter Safety Course Requirements

Hunter education rules before you start the Texas practice test.

Texas hunters must complete an approved hunter education course before hunting. Here is what to know before you take the Texas practice test.

Minimum age / certification
Hunter education certification is required for hunters born on or after a state-defined cutoff date — verify the exact date on the TPWD website.
Blaze orange
Not legally required in Texas, but recommended for visibility, especially when hunting quail or pheasant.
Loaded firearms in vehicles
Do not carry a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle on a public road; firearms should be unloaded, cased, and not visible through the windows.
Tagging
If a harvested game animal requires it, complete the tag and secure it to the animal immediately: cut out the month and day, and write the ranch and county on the tag.
License year
Sample value — verify the current license year on the TPWD website.

Official regulations are set by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). Always confirm current rules there before hunting.
