Hunter safety rules affect real decisions in the field, so we think you deserve to know exactly where our content comes from — not just that it exists. This page explains our sourcing, our confidence levels, and how to tell us if something is wrong.
The 50-question structure and chapter weighting used across this site (10% conservation, 40% firearm safety, 20% field practices, 8% laws & wildlife ID, 12% personal responsibility, 10% general) come from the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA-USA) Online Assessment Standard — the reference nearly every state hunter education course is built on. National questions are written from public-domain hunter-safety knowledge and rephrased in our own words; we do not copy text from any commercial course provider.
Certification age cutoffs, hunter-orange requirements, vehicle transport rules, tagging systems, and license years are sourced from each state's own fish & wildlife or natural resources agency — the same agency you'd contact to confirm a rule before you hunt. Every state page on this site links directly to that agency.
Most state facts on this site come from a direct read of the agency's own website. A smaller number come from secondary research (search results that cite the same official domain) after the agency's site blocked automated access during our research. We flag the second category explicitly, in an orange note, on the state page it applies to — we would rather show you a lower-confidence fact clearly labeled than present everything with the same false certainty.
Regulations also change — a state can revise its hunter-orange requirement or certification age from one season to the next. Treat every fact on this site as a starting point, and always confirm current rules on the official agency page linked from each state.
Not every state has state-specific questions yet — where we don't, the practice test for that state currently covers the national IHEA-USA standard only, and the state's rules page says so. We're adding state-specific content progressively rather than publishing rules we haven't verified.
Regulations change, and even a careful research pass can miss something. Tell us what's wrong and which state or question it's on — we read every message and correct confirmed errors.
