Minimum age / certification
The course is open to residents starting at age 10; required for every first-time firearm license holder regardless of age since 1972; hunters 16 and under must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at the course.
Loaded firearms in vehicles
Under general New Jersey firearm law, a gun in a vehicle must be unloaded and either in a locked, closed case or a locked trunk, with ammunition inaccessible from inside the vehicle.
Tagging
Harvests (deer, turkey, goose, coyote/fox, beaver/otter) are reported through the Automated Harvest Report System; the paper license stub must still be filled out immediately even after reporting online or by phone; each deer in a multi-deer transport needs its own confirmation number.
License year
Expires December 31 regardless of purchase date, with an exception for deer permits in zones whose season runs past December 31.
