Colorado Hunter Safety Course Requirements

Hunter education rules before you start the Colorado practice test.

Colorado hunters generally need hunter safety certification before hunting. Here is what to know before you take the Colorado practice test.

Minimum age / certification
No minimum age to take the hunter education course; an Apprentice Hunter certificate is available starting at age 10; hunters age 12-15 must be accompanied by a certified adult (within sight/voice contact) for big game. Certification required for anyone born on or after January 1, 1949.
Blaze orange
At least 500 square inches of solid fluorescent orange or pink above the waist for deer, elk, pronghorn, moose, and bear during firearms seasons; archery hunters are generally exempt.
License year
April 1 through March 31.

Official regulations are set by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). Always confirm current rules there before hunting.
